But the irony wasn’t picked up and his/her words were afterwards wrongly attributed to me.

Well, of course you can make whatever choices you like, based – in this case, presumably – on your opposition to the BNP.

But there is no reason to be ‘horrified, terrified and disgusted’ by things that – by and large – I never intended to say anyway, or, if you had been aware of the full context, might not have struck you as quite so offensive.
